Character

Charlie Hobbes

Blind from birth, Charlie Hobbes’ view of the world had always been through a sightless lens. As a boy, he was often in a church pew at the behest of his very religious, but loving, mother, who firmly believed that her son had been struck blind in her womb “so that the works of God might be displayed in him”. His childhood self trusted that narrative until the night his father returned home in a drunken rage. The family gun found its way into young Charlie’s blind hands; and, taking aim at his father’s slurred and venomous voice, he fired—tragically killing his mother instead, along with any thoughts of gods and angels or miracle healings. Many years later, he chose to undergo a risky experimental procedure, created by Dr. Hijo Divino, which successfully restored his sight. Post-surgery, he discovered he could see “between things” to possible outside dimensions, and unearthly visions began to appear in the forms of the Angels and Demons he had studied in his youth. Newly enabled to follow his childhood dream of becoming a police officer, he reached out to Ronnie Richards, a city cop whose investigation he had aided years earlier after piecing together critical details from a single radio newscast. Ronnie, remembering Charlie’s impressive analytical mind, encouraged him to enroll in the Academy. Now a full-fledged member of The Columbia Police Force, Charlie’s new job collides with his mystical visions, dragging the painful past into the treacherous present, as he and Ronnie investigate a serial killer known only as The Butcher. And what Charlie sees might hold the key to catching him.
